What decided the race
Leclerc was out on lap 2. He put a left-rear wheel on a drain cover at Parabolica, spun through the gravel and hit the barrier hard enough to red-flag the race, and climbed out unaided. Read the race report (opens in a new tab).
Antonelli started 19th, after the power unit change this page previewed on Thursday. He was sixth by lap 4 of the restarted race and led by lap 18, and Mercedes let the two cars swap from there.
A virtual safety car on lap 28, for Stroll’s hydraulic failure, settled it. Antonelli pitted for fresh mediums and Russell stayed out on used hards that faded over the closing stint. Antonelli ran wide through the gravel with five laps left, lost a second and a half, and passed Russell on lap 50 of 53 to win by 3.8s. The classification above is final. Russell was investigated for a yellow flag while leading and Tsunoda for his position at the restart, and both were cleared. The one penalty applied after the flag was five seconds for Perez, for failing to follow the race director’s instructions, which moved him from 18th to 19th. The FIA declared a heat hazard
The official forecast put the heat index above 31°C for the race, which is the threshold in Article B1.5.10. Austria in June was the season’s first heat hazard.
A heat hazard makes the driver cooling system mandatory and raises the minimum weight by 5kg to cover the kit and its battery. Wearing the vest is still the driver’s choice, and anyone who leaves it off carries 0.5kg of ballast instead. Read the race director’s notice (opens in a new tab).

Monza is 5.793 km long and the Grand Prix runs for 53 laps. The cars are at full throttle for about 80% of the lap and reach their top speed on the 1.1 km start/finish straight. Norris’s pole lap in 2024 averaged 263 km/h. Formula 1’s circuit guide (opens in a new tab).
Where overtakes happen
Monza has four straight-mode zones. Three end in heavy braking: Rettifilo (Turns 1–2), Roggia (Turns 4–5) and Ascari (Turns 8–10).
The kerbs at Turns 1, 4 and 8 have been rebuilt for 2026, and the gravel on the exit of Roggia is now asphalt run-off. Read Pirelli’s Monza preview (opens in a new tab).
The fourth ends at Parabolica (Turn 11), which is quicker and lighter on the brakes than the three chicanes. Overtake detection sits just before it, so a driver who gets through there close behind keeps the tow onto the main straight and can use Overtake down it, into Rettifilo. That is where most passes happen.
Rettifilo compresses the field into one heavy stop on lap one, so a driver at the back of your Top 5 carries more opening-lap risk here than at most circuits.

Tyres wear most in fast corners. Monza has few of those, so the C5 can last longer here than it usually does.
A stop at Monza costs more time than at almost any other race, so teams will try to one-stop. Heat is the usual reason that fails. Pirelli expects the rears to overheat out of the chicanes rather than wear out, which keeps a one-stop on.
